STATEMENT

An interdisciplinary focus acknowledges the parallels between established genres and creative diversity, allowing for innovative directions in art making and practice to emerge. Inspired by the ubiquitous novelty of the ceramic Chia Pet™ figurine, my work combines ceramic materials, living plants, and sustainable power technologies, with repurposed commercial products. Issues of environmental ethics can be more about the tools, models, and ideas that already exist and less about the problems and limitations we need to overcome. Topics such as ecology, sustainability, urban planning, and the Do-It-Yourself ideology influence my practice. Works generally fall into the Sculpture/Installation/Intervention formats and often address site-specific concerns, the natural and/or social environment, and the innovative retooling/reuse of common materials. By inventing new ways to connect nature to everyday life, I transgress boundaries between art, architecture, landscape, and design.
